From March 10 - 12, 2008 approximately 350 people from across Canada and the USA, as well as people from as far away as New Zealand met in Richmond, British Columbia, Canada to participate in the Changing the World One Person at a Time: The Canadian Experience conference. The conference was sponsored by:

This website has been developed as a result of participants' interest to continue the dialogue about how best to develop individualized supports for children and adults who live with a developmental disability.

The site is a "wiki". What is a wiki you ask? Well, it is a website that includes the collaboration of work from many different authors. A wiki site allows anyone to edit, delete, or modify the content on the web. The first wiki creator named the site after a chain of buses in Hawaii - Wiki means "quick" in Hawaiian. If you are really keen, and want to learn more read this article.

The site will be built by those who use it over time. Currently, the majority of the presentations made at the conference are available in the attachment list below. Conference participants, and site visitors, can also continue the dialogue in the discussion forum.

MSA2008 Perspective on Supporting Individuals 0 Apr 11 2008, 1:54 PM EDT by MSA2008
Thread started: Apr 11 2008, 1:54 PM EDT  Watch
One of the issues that we seem to be facing in some of our supports is a perspective that some employees have regarding their role and practices in supporting individuals. We hire people trained in community support work but the type of supports that individuals deserve seems to fall within a personal assistant mentality. A personal assistant will help an individual with what the individual directs and will take a back seat role during encounters with the individual and others in the community. A personal assistant is not there to be the spokesperson for the individual unless directed to do so by the individual. A good personal assistant mentality puts the individual first realizing that they work for the individual and if the individual is not happy with the way their personal assistant is working with them, the individual will not want the personal assistant in their life.

We are in the process of retraining some of our employees to be better personal assistants in their role as community support workers. Hopefully we will be able to change some attitudes that are clearly off track.

Not sure if anyone has anything to add, comment on, etc.
Do you find this valuable?
